SAI AARTIS

Why Aartis are performed

Aarti is a congregational mode of worship in which all the devotees stand before the deity or a deified saint and sing devotional songs in unison. Normally the singing is accompanied by musical instruments like bells, gongs and cymbals. The objects of worship that is the holy idols of the Lord are devoutly decorated with posy garlands and aromatic incense sticks called agarbaththis and dhoop sticks are lit before the lord. While the congregation indulges in aarti singing in unison to the accompaniment of musical instruments, the camphor is put in a ladle-like tray and is lit and the priest revolves it clockwise around the holy idol of the lord. Sometimes instead of camphor, wicks soaked and submerged in oil or cow-ghee is lit and revolves clockwise round the holy idol.

After the end of devotional singing, the flame of the aarti-lamp is offered to the devotees who quickly put their hands around the flame and draw it close to their eyes or heart or over the head as if they are drawing the divine energy into their hearts and lives.

In Sai Baba temples, aartis are performed 4 times. Kakada aarti in the wee hours of the monring; the noon Aarti around 12:00 noon; Dhoop Aarti at dusk that is around 6:00 in the evening; and the Shej Aarti at nighttime around between 9 and 10:30 depending on the convenient of the temple timings.
